ASSINIBOIA - Assiniboia Elementary School hosted their annual Grades 4-8 standards track meet on the school grounds on June 20.
The Grade 4s from the 7th Avenue school, made their way over to participate in the event. Over 150 students competed in five different events throughout the day – long jump, high jump, ball throw, 100m, and 75m (Grades 7 and 8) or 50m (Grades 4 to 6).
In each category, the top five placements were assigned points which were then calculated together to create aggregate winners for each grade.
The playground was filled with supporters cheering on the athletes throughout the day. They had a canteen where athletes and spectators were able to enjoy hot dogs, ice cream treats, and donuts.
Moose Jaw Track Meet
On the competitive side of track and field, students travelled to Moose Jaw on May 16 to compete against other athletes from around the division. The first meet is a section meet where they complete against students from Bengough, Rockglen, and Coronach respectively. Athletes are able to select up to four different events to compete in.
AES sent 28 athletes to the section meet. After the event wrapped up, AES had two students receive aggregate medals for the section track meet which meant they placed first in all four events that they competed in. The section aggregate winners were Ramsey Thompson and Keagan Haug. The top two winners in each event, from each section meet advanced to the district competition the following week on May 23.
AES represented well at sections and 14 athletes returned to compete at districts. For this event, athletes competed against athletes from around Prairie Â鶹´«Ã½AV School Division. After a hard day of competition for all, an AES athlete achieved first in all four events to capture the aggregate at the district level. The winner was Keagan Haug.
