WEYBURN – Two young Weyburn sisters who love to make crafts, Sawyer and Elliott Morley, decided to help out refugees affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The girls, who are eight and five respectively, saw items on the news about Ukraine along with their mom, Nancy, and decided to help them out by selling crafts and donating the money.
Sawyer, who attends Grade 3 at Assiniboia Park Elementary School, said, “We enjoy making crafts, and when we saw what was happening in Ukraine, we wanted to make crafts and sell them.”
She and her little sister, who’s in kindergarten, are “Artsy Farts”, with a heart, on Facebook, where a number of their creations were sold, along with some sold through The Willow Branch store downtown.
The girls made wreaths, string art and bunny bums, which are little flower pots that look like a bunny is digging in with his bum in the air.
Asked if the girls had any help to make their crafts, mom Nancy said she did the hot-gluing, but otherwise it was their own work.
Nancy estimated they have made and sold about 30 of the crafts so far, and they plan to make some more until around April 14 when they will stop for the Easter break from school.
After the break, she said they will make some different things for Mother’s Day in May.
She admitted they were really surprised by the positive response from the community, as they didn’t think they would sell that many crafts.
“We had a lot of fun and it wasn’t hard work,” said Sawyer, and she and her sister shyly added, “Thank you to everyone who supported us.”
The funds raised from their crafts will be sent to the Canadian Red Cross in support of their work to help the refugees from Ukraine.
