WEYBURN – A program initiated by the Weyburn Rotary Club to provide kits or totes for those in an emergency situation is now being expanded to include items for children.
Rotary member Gwen Wright had the items spread out on a table at the club’s luncheon meeting on Thursday, with the largest kit for women, a smaller one for men, and the new kit for children.
For the next round of kits, she said the club will do up 12 kits for women, nine for men and four for children.
They are given to four community agencies that help people in emergency situations, and include Envision Counselling, the Salvation Army, the Family Place and Blue Earth. The children’s kits will go to Envision and the Family Place.
The items in the kits are mainly supplied by Pharmasave and Prairie Sky Co-op, with Pharmasave so far providing about $1,140 worth of items.
The Co-op has provided a $200 gift card to Rotary to help the purchase of items needed, plus they provided a 10-per-cent discount off gift cards provided by Rotary in the kits. The club itself has paid out about $941 so far to provide items for the kits as needed, said Wright.
“I expect we’re going to see way more for children,” said Wright, in highlighting the items provided for the kits.
She noted a young man who earlier said his life had been saved by one of the kits has been back to the Salvation Army about once a month since then.
