The Weyburn Police Service received 92 calls for service during the week of May 31 through June 6, resulting in a total of 21 charges, including eight under the Criminal Code of Canada.
During the week, officers responded to several calls involving concerns of mental health. These calls are generally assistance calls where there may be concerns of an individual’s well-being and officers assist by locating the individual and ensuring they receive health care if needed. One of the week’s calls involved an apprehension warrant under the Mental Health Act, which resulted in one of the officers being assaulted during the apprehension as the individual was not compliant.
Officers also responded to several calls involving domestic disputes, health order compliance, general wellbeing checks, and animal calls. Calls concerning animals range from barking dogs to pets left inside a vehicle on a hot day.
This past week was considerably hot and the Weyburn Police were called to a few parking lots in response to concerns of vehicles with pets left inside and the windows either closed or nearly closed.
The week’s charges consist of 12 traffic violations under the Traffic Safety Act, one violation under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act, and eight charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. The Criminal Code charges include four matters involving individuals who failed to comply with a condition of their release, and two drivers facing charges related to impaired driving as a result of traffic stops.
One driver was stopped for failing to wear a seatbelt and further investigation revealed the individual was impaired. Another driver was stopped for a traffic violation and ultimately refused to comply with a breath demand. That driver was charged accordingly and a passenger was charged for unlawfully having open alcohol in the vehicle.
Also during the week, an early Sunday morning call from a resident awakened by noise resulted in an individual being charged with mischief to property, involving several street signs that were pulled out of ground.
