Weyburn police lay a number of impaired driving charges

Impaired driving charges were laid against a few different drivers this week, two of them as a result of accidents

Weyburn police had 94 calls from Feb. 26 to March 5, and laid several charges, including for impaired driving.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 94 calls for service during the period of Feb. 26 to March 5, with 35 charges being laid during the week. Of the 35 charges, seven were criminal code charges, 12 were traffic violations, along with 10 bylaw offences, one three-day suspension and five were charges for failing to comply with a court order.

In the early morning hours on Feb. 27, officers responded to a residence on Brimacombe Drive where a vehicle had crashed into the front yard bushes. Police located a youth female driver exhibiting signs of impairment and subsequently charged the driver with impaired driving, refusal and resisting arrest. She was detained in custody until sober when she was released for a court date at the end of March.

An officer initiated a traffic stop for an expired license plate on Feb. 28 at approximately 7:30 p.m. The officer suspected the driver of being impaired. A breath sample was requested, the individual refused and was arrested for refusal to provide a breath sample, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. The accused was released for a court date in April.

Police called to check on an empty business on March 1 and located two individuals inside. One of the individuals was on conditions not to have any contact with the other individual and was charged with failing to comply with conditions and released for a future court date.

A homeowner called on March 4 about a bicycle being stolen from in front of their house. The theft was captured on their doorbell camera. The matter is still under investigation.

Police were called to an accident on March 5 at 12:50 p.m., where a vehicle was struck from behind and the driver then left the scene. Police located the vehicle and the driver a short distance away, and on further investigation found the driver to be impaired. He was arrested for impaired operation of a conveyance and was taken to the police station where he failed the breathalyzer test and was charged. He was released for a court date in the future.
