The Weyburn Police Service responded to 67 calls for service during the week of August 2-8, resulting in a total of nine charges. Of the charges, five were traffic related, three were under the Criminal Code of Canada, and one was under the Alcohol & Gaming Regulation Act.
The Weyburn Fire Department responded to a fire alarm being pulled in a residential building, and they called for police assistance after discovering the suspect male that was seen leaving the scene was in possession of a machete. Police were able to identify a suspect and the investigation is ongoing.
WPS attended several calls concerning mental health. Officers treat these calls very seriously and every effort is made to locate the individual and get them the care they require. Officers attended six calls of this nature and assisted by ensuring their wellbeing and/or bringing them to a health facility.
During the week, officers located two very intoxicated individuals in public that required assistance. In the first incident, officers were able to bring the individual home into the care of a responsible adult. The second incident saw the individual sleep it off and sober up in custody. No charges resulted in either incident.
Also during the week, the Weyburn Police Service responded to a variety of other calls involving erratic driving, suspicious persons, domestic disputes, general wellbeing checks, alarms, and calls to assist other agencies including EMS, the Weyburn Fire Dept., and the Regina Police Service.
The Weyburn Police recently acquired a “speed data collection” device that is being utilized in areas where speeding has been identified as a concern. The data collected from the device will help the police focus on the areas of greatest concern, and at the specific times shown to be the greatest level of non-compliance.
