WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 81 calls for service during the week of Feb. 6 to 12, resulting in a total of 12 charges. Of the charges, the majority were traffic related as 11 of the week’s 12 charges were laid under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA). In addition, several bylaw infractions were issued in relation to parking.
A few incidents of theft were reported during the week. One incident involves a business location that was broken into and an amount of copper wire was stolen. Another incident involves a “gas-and-dash” as an individual filled their vehicle with fuel and then drove off without paying. These matters are currently being investigated.
Many of the week’s matters that resulted in charges were traffic related. On Monday afternoon, police were called to a building that sustained damage from a vehicle backing into it and then leaving the scene. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and the driver was subsequently charged with unsafe backing and failing to report the collision.
On Sunday evening, one driver had his driver’s license suspended for three days, and his vehicle impounded for the same length of time, following a traffic stop in which the officer noticed signs of impairment.
Other traffic related infractions resulting in a charge include speeding, disobeying a traffic signal, driving without a valid license, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failing to properly wear a seatbelt. Several warnings were also given out.
Officers attended several disturbance-type calls during the week. On Tuesday, a taxi driver required assistance with an unruly passenger. Officers spoke to the passenger who decided to walk instead of utilizing the taxi service any further.
On Thursday, officers attended a health facility to assist with an unsatisfied individual causing a disturbance. Officers were able to mediate the matter without further incident. On Saturday evening, officers responded to a heated dispute between two adult males. This incident was also meditated without further incident.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals or other bylaw concerns.
