WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 81 calls for service during the week of June 27 through July 3, resulting in a total of 16 charges. Of the charges, 11 were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, three under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), one under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act (CDSA), and one under the Summary Offences Procedure Act (SOPA).
Although the call volume suggests a relatively average week, officers were very busy as, in addition to the regular calls for service, Weyburn hosted a number of public events requiring police assistance.
On Wednesday, the Weyburn Police hosted a Bike Safety “Rodeo” in which approximately 125 young bicyclists attended. Many volunteers, including the Weyburn Beavers ball club, came out to help with the bike safety initiative as the youngsters had their bicycle and helmets checked, learned some safety tips, and tested their skills on an obstacle course.
Thursday was an even bigger public event day, as the morning kicked off with the Canada Day parade, and the evening saw one of the largest open-air music concerts Weyburn has ever hosted (if not the largest) with approximately 4,000 people in attendance.
Police led the parade and coordinated traffic control with the assistance of personnel from the City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Fire Dept. The evening saw an increased police presence as additional officers were on duty during the music concert which saw a very successful turnout.
Thursday was also busy for the Weyburn Police on the enforcement front, as several officers executed a CDSA search warrant on a residence within the city. Approximately half a kilogram of cocaine and a large amount of cash was located and seized. As a result, a 31-year-old male from B.C. faces charges of possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of property obtained by crime. The male appeared in court early on July 4th, and is being held in custody pending a further court appearance.
Several reports of mischief and/or theft were reported during the week, including the theft of a bicycle, a generator, and a homebuilt utility trailer. These matters are currently under investigation.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, excessive noise, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, and calls relating to animals or bylaw concerns.
