Weyburn honours Diabetes Awareness Month: proclamation and risk assessment event planned

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and on November 8, Weyburn will officially acknowledge this with a proclamation by City Council.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and on November 8, Weyburn will officially acknowledge this with a proclamation by City Council.

According to Colleen Walsh, public programs and services coordinator for the Canadian Diabetes Association in Â鶹´«Ã½AV Saskatchewan, this is a positive move, sending a strong message.

"Diabetes Awareness Month is a time to reflect on one's health and choose a 'live healthy' attitude. We're so pleased Weyburn will join us in recognizing the importance and seriousness of diabetes, and encourage residents to take the time to assess their risk for diabetes," said Walsh

Further to diabetes awareness, Weyburn residents can join the Canadian Diabetes Association on Saturday, November 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Wheatland Senior Centre for "Are you at risk: Diabetes Prevention and Awareness" - a free educational event.

Featuring local health professionals speaking on healthy meal planning, diet and blood glucose testing from A to Z, the event will be followed by a health fair where attendees can assess their risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Today, more than nine million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes - a condition that, if left unchecked, puts a person at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In Saskatchewan, diabetes directly affects more than 70,000 people, or one in 14.
