UPDATE: Weyburn hairstylist students hold grad competition

The students did the hair and makeup of their models through the morning, and they were judged in the afternoon by professional hairstylists

WEYBURN – Hairstyling students at the Weyburn campus of Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast College took part in a hairstylists competition on Saturday, the first one they’ve been able to have in three years.

The students, under instructor Kate Mahoney, have finished the theory portion of their classes, and the remainder of their classtime will be salon time, practicing their skills on clients.

For the competition, Mahoney decided to go with a grad theme rather than the bridal theme for past hairstyling competitions.

The top three hairstylists and models were, in first place, Julie-Anne Vogel and her model, Dawson Fuller; second was Braeya Wotherspoon and her model Halle Wilson; and third was Chloe Drader and her model, Risa Burdan.

Each stylist had a model come in around 9 a.m., and they had the morning to do the hair and makeup, and once the models were in their gowns, the judges came in after lunch to judge the total look of each model. The judges are professional hairstylists from Weyburn.

Mahoney noted the students have to log in a total of 1,500 hours in the salon over the 45-week course, and they have about three and a half months left to make up those hours.

The salon is open for clients from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., except Thursdays when they’re open noon to 6 p.m.

Anyone interested in making an appointment can phone the salon at 306-848-2509.
