WEYBURN - The 40th anniversary edition of the Weyburn Communithon will be a unique event, with a mixture of both live and prerecorded performances of a wide range of talent from the community, as they go live at 8 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 from the Weyburn Legion Hall with the opening ceremonies.
“We have a wide range of talent this year,” said Communithon chair Korryn Kubashek. “We are welcoming back a live audience to the Legion Hall.”
With this special anniversary year, the organizing committee looked for different acts from the community, such as a video from the skating club, along with the school performances that parents and grandparents look forward to each year.
Due to COVID requirements for students to be only with their cohorts, the choir and band performances have been prerecorded.
Some highlights of new acts include a dog act, a baby race at 9 a.m., live pumpkin carving, and a birthday celebration at 6:40 p.m., said Kubashek. There will be individually-wrapped cupcakes to give away, and people will be invited to come to the hall to sing “Happy Birthday” for the Communithon event.
There will be videos of some past Captain United and Lady Charity representatives to help celebrate this milestone, and at least one past Lady Charity will be in person at Communithon.
There will be totals done throughout the day, and the final tally and closing celebration will take place at 11 p.m., with a live band to help wrap up the day. There will also be surprise events throughout the day, such as quick minute-to-win-it contests.
The Knights of Columbus and the Prairie Sky Co-op will again hold the Communithon Luncheon in support of the event, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring cabbage rolls, perogies, smokies, onions, sauerkraut and sour cream. The meals will cost $15 each, and are available by take-out only from McKenna Hall. To order, call 306-842-4481, or 306-861-1997 or pick up at the door (there will be no deliveries available). All of the funds raised will go to the Communithon.
The whole purpose of Communithon is to raise funds for the 11 community agencies which are funded through the Regina United Way.
The agencies this year include Big Brothers Big Sisters Weyburn, CMHA Weyburn, Canadian Red Cross, Community Low Income Centre, CNIB Foundation, Envision Counselling and Support Centre, Inclusion Weyburn, Spinal Cord Injury Sask., Weyburn Care-A-Van Society, Weyburn Special Care Home Auxiliary and the Weyburn Youth Centre.
To donate in support of these agencies, there are a variety of methods available. People can go online to the Communithon web page and click on the donation button; they can phone their pledge in to 540-GOAL (4625); they can drop by a donation by curbside pickup, where they can pull up in front of the Legion and honk their horn, and a volunteer will come out to get the pledge; or they can give in person at the hall.
For those wishing to come to the Legion in person, the Legion will be asking for proof of double-vaccination or a negative COVID test with photo ID.
For any child under 12, they need to have a parent or guardian with them who can vouch for their age, since they won’t have a photo ID available. Once people have given their proof of vaccination or negative test to enter the Legion, a record of who came will be kept in case someone needs to leave and come back to the hall again.
“We just want to invite everybody back for the live audience,” said Kubashek.
