Weyburn city council has awarded the contract for repaving Ebel Road to Genco Asphalt.
At their meeting on May 10, councillors were told the road has deteriorated to a substandard condition.
Engineering consultants Clifton Associates did a study of the road in 2020, with recommendations for repairs and to ensure it can withstand industrial weight traffic.
The repair of Ebel Road had $100,000 budgeted for this year, but as additional funds are needed to do the repairs needed, funds were requested from an allotment for the repairs to the Highway 13 bridge. As this is no longer the responsibility of the City, funds of $1.2 million were freed up in the budget, and some of the funds will go to the Ebel Road repair.
Genco Asphalt had the lowest bid of $541,819, the lower of two bids they made, with four other bids also made for this project.
City engineer Jennifer Wilkinson explained the company had initially bid $622,856, but then proposed the lower bid using an alternative to the geo fabric material they had first suggested.
After a technical evaluation, this alternative geotextile fabric was determined to perform the function needed to keep the road stable and in good condition.
The contractor will be required to remove the existing pavement and excavate the base and subgrade down to 350mm below final grade. They will then need to stabilize the subgrade and install the geotextile fabric over the subgrade, with a 150mm subgrade to be added on top, and 100mm of base, then asphalt pavement, covering about 6,950 square metres.
• In the building report for April, the City of Weyburn issued seven building permits with a total construction value of $1,774,200.
This brings the year-to-date for construction permits to 17 permits with a total value of $3,285,700.
This compares to the year-to-date from the end of April last year, when eight permits had been issued with a total value of $1,345,000.
The projects include major interior renovations at a business worth $980,000, a reno for a new cannabis retail outlet worth $15,000, work for a new cannabis retail store worth $200,000, a new home with garage worth $550,000, a garage worth $10,000 and a gazebo worth $2,200.
