WEYBURN – The 29th annual Parade of Lights will bring the colours and sights of the Christmas season to life on Thursday, Dec. 1, in downtown Weyburn, held by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.
“The Chamber always organizes the Parade of Lights on the first Thursday of December as our way of helping everyone kick off the holiday season,” explained Executive Director, Monica Osborn.
The Chamber of Commerce is taking entries for the parade, and there is no cost to enter the parade. The maximum height allowed for floats is 19 feet six inches.
The parade will assemble on the fair grounds at 6:30 p.m., and will then proceed down Prairie Avenue at 7 p.m.
The parade will turn at Third Street, and will go all the way through the downtown to Railway Avenue, and it will then come up Second Street up to Bison Avenue, and will disperse on Government Road.
For 2022, Third Street will be blocked off from Railway and Coteau Avenue in order to eliminate parked cars in the area.
Each year, the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce presents an award for “Best Float for Business” and “Best Float for Organization”. Also, organizers have confirmation that their special guest, Santa Claus, will be the Grand Finale of the Parade.
“We encourage everyone to dress warm, shop local, and enjoy the evening,” said Osborn, adding, “It will be a great atmosphere downtown.”
Organizers ask that those on floats do not throw candy as the streets may be slippery, but there can be people walking alongside the floats to hand out candies along the route.
Entries can be as elaborate or as simple as the business wants, with lights being the most popular way to decorate. With the parade happening after dark, lights are also the best way to make your entry visible.
