“Going bald once was enough!”

Darlene Olson was so excited to share her new idea for the Creative Tables fundraiser this year. Over the years, this woman and her team of volunteers have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Mary Kay Ashe Foundation’s Look Good, Feel Better program. The painful ordeal that cancer puts women through can be overwhelming but there are ways to ease the pain and bring some joy to the healing process.

This event will have participants meet at Arcola’s Prairie Place Hall on Sunday, Aug. 15 to walk, run and/or ride a specified route while raising money for this program. There will be options for a five-kilometre, 10-km or 21-km course and you can do any of the above to complete the course or any combination of the above. The times will be determined once the number of participants is finalized by the Aug. 6 registration deadline.

“We will have special food, drinks and plans for along the route, just like the fun we have at a Creative Tables dinner event, so I need to know the numbers ahead of time. This is going to be a hoot!” Olson exclaimed.

“I really want people to call me to register so I can explain and get their details,” Olson said. “Some people have already told me they are going to do a theme with friends, just like the traditional Creative Tables evenings, and I said, ‘you go for it!’ Even if you are in a wheelchair, no problem, we will push you.”

The cost to register is only $50 and people can support, donate to those participating or give directly to the Look Good, Feel Better program. As always, any donation over $20 in support of someone will receive a tax-deductible receipt and all registrations will receive the same. Registrations will be taken after the Aug. 6 date but will require a $60 registration fee.

“This is for all ages and groups. It will be a light, airy event where the distances and times don’t matter, but just being involved is what is important,” Olson said. “And this is an event you can participate in from anywhere. We have people from other cities who are going to participate where they are living from or are holidaying. I am pretty excited.”

What a great event to plan into your summer fun.

Would you like to volunteer? Volunteers are always needed and always welcome so please let Olson know if you can help in the planning, organizing or hands on for the actual event.

Watch next week’s Observer for the online registration location but for now, contact Olson at 306-455-2554 or 305-577-8087 and leave her a message if she is not available. She will love that.
