Inattentive driving practices led to a couple of vehicle collisions on Estevan streets this past week, causing significant damages but fortunately, no injuries.

Estevan Police Service (EPS) personnel stated that during the day of Feb. 22, they were required to respond to two incidents with the first one occurring on Kensington Avenue. The police report that two vehicles that were being driven in the same direction were involved in the collision when the driver of one vehicle attempted to make a lane change when it wasn't safe to do so. That person was charged accordingly. One vehicle involved in the collision ended up striking a street light standard. One of the vehicles suffered significant damages.

The second collision occurred near a parking lot entrance/exit near the Canadian Tire store on King Street. A vehicle entering the street from the parking lot failed to yield to oncoming traffic which resulted in a collision. Both vehicles received extensive damages and had to be towed from the scene. One driver was charged for making a left turn before it was safe to do so.

On the night of Feb. 24, EPS members were called to a local lounge in response to a report of a fight among a number of people. Some of the combatants fled prior to police arrival and one man was transported to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries while police opened an investigation.

While police were on patrol that same night, they came upon a fight that had broken out between two men on 11th Avenue and Fifth Street. One combatant needed to be transported to hospital for treatment (stitches) and it was discovered that the other fighter was in breach of conditions that had been imposed on him by a British Columbia court. He was given an April 2 court date to answer to those charges.

Police were then called to a local hotel in response to a complaint of an intoxicated man wandering the hallways of the facility, knocking on doors and disturbing guests. A 31-year-old man was arrested for being intoxicated in public and lodged in cells.

Another intoxicated man was lifted out of danger by city police that same night after he was discovered wandering aimlessly on the north side of the city. He too, was charged for public intoxication.

Before the night was over, police received a call from another hotel regarding a similar activity involving an intoxicated man disturbing guests by knocking on windows and doors. In this instance, the man had left the premises prior to police arrival and they were unable to locate him.

Police also issued one 24-hour licence suspension before the evening was over.

On the night of Feb. 25, EPS members attended to a domestic disturbance at a local apartment complex. One person had left prior to police arrival but the other participant was spoken to and advised to remain in the residence for the rest of the evening. Police determined that alcohol was a factor in the event.

Theft of merchandise from a local convenience store valued at about $100 led to a police investigation. They stated they now have a suspect and will continue with their work of bringing charges against the perpetrator.

EPS were asked to set up another investigation of a break-and-enter incident in the Pleasantdale area of the city. Homeowners returning from a vacation found that their home had been entered during their absence.

On the night of Feb. 25, a 28-year-old man was arrested for being intoxicated in public after he was noted staggering along the sidewalk and stumbling into vehicular traffic in the central part of the city. It was also reported that the man had nearly fallen down on several occasions. When police attempted to determine his identity, the man became belligerent and unco-operative so he was arrested and lodged in cells for his own safety.

Later that same night, police received a call regarding a disturbance at a local convenience store. When they arrived, they learned a fight had broken out between two parties while a third person associated with one of the combatants attempted to remove items from the store.

After police intervened, the lifted products were paid for and the participants in the little melee were sent on their way.
