The provincial government reminded producers that they can start salvaging hay in provincial highway ditches beginning on July 9.聽

鈥淭he annual hay salvage and mowing program provides many benefits by taking into account the needs of area land owners, producers and travellers,鈥 Highways and Infrastructure Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. 鈥淭he benefits include improved sightlines for drivers, better snow storage during winter months, a neat appearance and better weed control.鈥澛

Hay can be collected any time during the spring or summer months.聽

Now, anyone is allowed to cut and bale hay in provincial highway ditches without permission from the property-owner, as long as no other operations have started in the areas under question according to the government鈥檚 Thursday announcement.聽

However, participants are asked to contact their local Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure office to provide contact information and locations where they鈥檙e salvaging hay to prevent quarrels.聽

All hay bales must be removed by August 8, otherwise they could be collected and disposed of without warning.聽

After August 8, the ministry might eliminate hay bales in locations where they might be considered unsafe for drivers.聽

Beginning next week, regular ditch mowing will occur along all four-lane highways until the fall arrives.聽

A four-metre-wide strip will be mowed adjacent to the other highways, with additional mowing as required, to ensure visibility for drivers, along with weed containment.聽

Weekly construction updates will give residents in Saskatchewan the most recent facts on projects in progress to assist with safe planning and efficient road travel throughout the summer.聽

Further travel information regarding emergency road closures, the status of ferries, barges and other road-related happenings affecting motorists can be found on the Highway Hotline at聽.
