The SHA’s geographic information on COVID-19 has improved, but limitations remain

The SHA reported that new COVID-19 maps were launched on August 4. The updated maps were designed to deliver specific geographic information on the locations of COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan.

One map included 13 regions with statistical information for COVID-19 activity in the region – there are now 13 new districts with different geographic boundaries in comparison to the previous six regions listed on the former map.

The second map from the SHA was broken down into 32 smaller zones – this map was designed to present new positive and currently active COVID-19 case numbers within selective regions in the province.

Regarding cases in specific communities like Assiniboia, restrictions will continue when reporting new or developing COVID-19 cases for certain reasons, especially for privacy requirements and other related concerns.

On occasion, a local governing body might release COVID-19 data, but the SHA is selective in releasing information, depending on the circumstances.

“At this time, we do not provide any data beyond what is posted on the website, included in news releases, or discussed in the media availabilities,” said Colleen Book of the SHA.

“There are a number of reasons why specific communities are not mentioned when positive COVID-19 cases are identified, or why we cannot go into details of cases,” Book stated in continuation.

Book offered some examples in underlining why the SHA can offer an abundance of information, but is constrained to a degree when providing certain COVID-19 factors existing in the province for critical reasons.

“Specific communities cannot be mentioned due to privacy requirements,” Book said. “Details may identify the individual/patient,” she added.

Also, Book noted the SHA must exercise a tremendous amount of caution during health enquiries.

“Public health may need to investigate where the case originated,” Book explained further.
