ASSINIBOIA -  I remember that I was holding our infant son the first time I heard a news report about Terry Fox.

Now I talk about Terry Fox with my grandchildren. 42 years have passed and Canadians are still caring about Terry Fox.

Terry planned to run home to British Columbia from Newfoundland. He ran 26 miles every day, his Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. He wanted to inspire every Canadian to give just one dollar to relieve the suffering of cancer patients. He dreamed of a world without cancer.

Terry planned to run home but cancer cut short his run, and he was carried home. Now we carry Terry Fox in our hearts and even in our national identity.

Terry could never have imagined that so many people would give of their time and money to keep his dream alive. The momentum has grown as the decades passed. Millions of dollars have been raised in Terry’s name and in his same spirit, and significant progress has been made to give relief and hope to people.

Although COVID kept his enormous fan club from two Runs, it did not stop his dream. The Terry Fox Foundation people kept working. Now their fundraising efforts and  research networks are stronger than ever.

For more information go their website at terryfox.org to see what all the excitement is about.

Community Walks and school Runs are back in September 2022. Plan to walk, run, bike or stroller in the run nearest you, and donate generously. Let’s each do what we can to bring about a world without cancer. Terry’s dream came into our national awareness 42 years ago. Let’s make this one the best Terry Fox Run yet.
