REGINA — eHealth Saskatchewan is temporarily removing QR codes from Saskatchewan residents’ vaccine certificates, after reports that the codes may show the wrong person’s information when displayed.
Released on Monday, the QR codes were added to the printable vaccine certificates made available through MySaskHealthRecord, in advance of the incoming proof of vaccine policy beginning in October.
But reports of glitches in the QR codes have officials pulling the feature temporarily, for privacy reasons.
“IT has identified that the COVID-19 vaccination records of up to 19 residents have the potential of displaying in other citizens’ QR codes [when scanned],” said a press release.
At least one instance where this has happened has been reported, said public health, and the individual whose information was “erroneously captured” has already been contacted.
"We are working closely with our vendor to investigate and resolve any issues and prevent other problems,” said Davin Church, eHealth Sask. vice-president of programs and technology.
“We understand the high demand in Saskatchewan for records to meet proof of vaccination requirements.”
Anyone who downloaded or printed their vaccination certificate with the QR code between Sept. 19-24 is asked to destroy the record, as they will not be valid.
Public health is also asking anyone who sees another individual’s name appear when their QR code is scanned to contact the provincial privacy officer.
Beginning tomorrow, eHealth is removing QR codes from vaccine certificates until the issue is resolved. Public health anticipates the codes to return early next week.
Until then, regular vaccine certificates from MySaskHealthRecord or wallet vaccine cards issued at the time of vaccination will be considered valid proof of vaccination in the province.
