REGINA — Regina police said a collision between a patrol car and a reportedly stolen vehicle occurred on Wednesday, after officers attempted to contain the youth driving the vehicle.
In a statement issued by Regina Police Service, a canine officer was patrolling in the area of 15th Avenue and Broad Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when they noticed a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction at an “extremely high rate of speed.”
After running the license plate, the car was determined to be stolen and the officer initiated pursuit alongside several other responding cruisers.
The vehicle turned onto a dead-end lane on the 2400 block of Broad Street, where police followed but left “ room for the suspect vehicle to exit.”
“As police tried to communicate with the suspect, instructing him to stop and exit the vehicle, the driver began a series of erratic driving manoeuvres, almost hitting an officer on foot, and eventually striking one police vehicle,” said the statement.
The driver, identified as a 16-year-old male, was removed from the car and taken into custody, uninjured. The RPS statement also didn't mention any injuries sustained by officers in the collision.
The youth was charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon identified as the vehicle, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, operate conveyance while prohibited, breach of release order and failure to comply with disposition.
The youth can not be named, due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He made his first court appearance on these charges on Wednesday afternoon.
