ROCANVILLE — The Town of Rocanville is looking at current procedures around snow removal and if any changes are required. Their snow removal policy was discussed at their Dec. 18 meeting.

“We are reviewing our snow removal policy right now,” Administrator Tanya Strandlund confirmed. “We are looking at, does our route make sense? Does removal of snow piles make sense? Can we do it in a more efficient way? We are doing a little bit of investigating on that one to make sure that it is as good as it possibly can get.”

Residential sidewalks are not much of an issue in Rocanville as there simply aren’t very many of them.

“We don’t have many sidewalks in town, actually,” Strandlund said. “There are a few left, but slowly throughout the decades, I think they’ve been removed. It just turned into people’s lawns.”

She did credit the businesses who do have sidewalks in front of their doors, noting they do a great job of keeping them clear.

“Our businesses on Main Street do a fantastic job of keeping their stuff clean in quite a timely matter,” Strandlund said. “It affects their business if you can’t get in there because it’s snowy.”

Dealing with roots

Rocanville town council approved a 75 per cent refund for a property dealing with roots in their water line on the 300 block of Carlton Street. The decision came during last week’s regular meeting of Town Council on Dec. 18, also the final one of 2024.

“The roots were pretty far from the house,” said Town Administrator Tanya Strandlund, adding that communication with the homeowner about preventative maintenance going forward has also occurred. “We have a product that we will give residents to help reduce the roots in their lines. They just have to put it down once, maybe twice a year to help.”

The granular product eats tree roots so mechanical root removal isn’t required as often.

Strandlund added that town staff also provide safety data sheets to residents who pick up the product from the town, going over proper usage and using it in well-ventilated areas.

“It does the trick, and those that do use it on a regular basis here in town already, they don’t have issues,” she said.

Purple flower chosen

In a beautification effort, the town has decided to add some colour to Main Street this spring. A quote was received from Cornucopia Gardens, and the plan is to place baskets and flower pots along Main Street with a purple colour theme this coming spring.
