Rocanville curling equipment decision goes to public meeting

Town council passes complaints policy to clarify the process.

The big question isn’t even about the equipment so much as if the community want to see curling return to Rocanville.

ROCANVILLE — The fate of Rocanville’s curling equipment will be put on hold for now. Originally an agenda item for last week’s regular town council meeting on Nov. 6, the ultimate decision was to hit pause in favour of a different forum.

“We are going to completely pause that now until the next community meeting, which is happening in February,” Administrator Tanya Strandlund said. “It’s a big decision to completely remove that from town, so the idea is to get the community involved a little bit more in this decision so that we can make the best decision. It’s been discussed for about a year now, and it’s a hard one.”

Technically, the big question isn’t even about the equipment so much as if the community want to see curling return to Rocanville.

“Maybe not next year or the year after, but you’re looking five to 10 years down the road as well,” Strandlund said.

Popularity of the sport ebbs and flows in Rocanville, especially with so many options in centres a short drive away.

“Welwyn, Moosomin, Whitewood, Esterhazy, Langenburg — they all have really strong curling communities,” Strandlund said. “So is that something that would we be supporting it and doing that whole regional co-operation with the other communities?”

No firm date has been set for the community meeting, but it is slated for February.

Complaints policy passed

Policy 1205 regarding public complaints was officially passed by council during last week’s meeting.

“We were doing a few little tweaks on it from last time. But it is now officially passed and in effect and will be posted,” Strandlund said.

The policy outlines what is accepted and what happens after a complaint is brought forward to the town.

Curb removal

It’s a spot where many a large truck driver winced after getting a little too close to the curb, but now the area will be a little easier to navigate. A length of curb at the RM weigh scale will be removed.

“It is town owned infrastructure, they just had to submit a request to have it removed,” Strandlund explained. “You can see exactly where a lot of the semis, their one tire will constantly hit it because there’s no grass left there. So we’ll just do a quick removal and make it easier, make it prettier. You can tell that it’s been hit multiple times and drove over, so we might as well remove that.”

An estimated six feet of curb will be removed.

Portable sign approved

As per Rocanville’s zoning bylaw, portable signs out for more than two weeks need council approval, and that scenario played out in council chambers last week.

“We’ve just approved the location and duration, because our bylaw allows for a 14-day temporary sign placement, and this one is going to be up for approximately four months,” explained Strandlund.

The content of the sign involves investing with Conexus.

Subdivision application approved

Council gave the go-ahead for three commercial lots to become two in an application involving Lots 26-28, Block 3. One lot is already developed on, with more work coming to the area in the future.

Pool engineer on record

Council named the new pool engineer on record, being Darren Cuthill Engineering.
