The Regina Police Service has confirmed that human remains discovered last year in a 23-year-old missing persons case are those of Patrick Thauberger.
Joseph George Thauberger, the 78-year-old brother of the victim, was charged late last year with first degree murder, offering an indignity to a dead human body and uttering threats.
He made his first court appearance on these charges on Nov. 30, 2020, and the charges remain before the courts currently.
Police have now positively confirmed through forensic examination that the human remains recovered in rural Saskatchewan in December of 2020 are those of 53-year-old Patrick.
“This was a major step forward in an historic missing persons investigation,” said the statement from RPS.
Court documents from last year state that Patrick was last seen while passing through Regina on a trip to an auto auction in the U.S., where he stopped to visit family en route home to St. Albert, Alta.
Family has been notified of the development in this cold case, and Regina Police continue to work alongside the Saskatchewan Coroners Service and the Crown in the investigation.
