Police warn public of ongoing scams

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of August 15 to 21: * Late on August 21, an off-duty Weyburn Police Service member came across a vehicle roll over two miles north of Cedoux on Highway #35.

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of August 15 to 21:

* Late on August 21, an off-duty Weyburn Police Service member came across a vehicle roll over two miles north of Cedoux on Highway #35. The female driver was transported to Weyburn General Hospital with undetermined injuries. The cause of the accident is unknown and is being investigated by the Weyburn RCMP.

* In the early morning of August 21, police were called to a local gas station, where a drunken male was screaming at the customers. The male was gone when police arrived, however, they were later able to locate the man and he was lodged in cells until sober. A short time later, an officer on patrol came across an intoxicated female sitting in the middle of an alley. She was arrested for being intoxicated in public and lodged in cells. Shortly after closing time of the pubs, police received yet another call regarding an intoxicated male. An employee of the pub came out to her vehicle and found a male passed out in the back seat. The male was lodged in cells.

* Also on August 21, the owner of a local motel called for police assistance due to a couple fighting. During the fight, some damage was done to the motel. Police were able to diffuse the situation and the owner allowed the couple to pay for the damage. No charges were laid.

* The Weyburn Opportunity Road Race took place on the August 21, with Cst. Gilchrist attending to help with traffic control.

* Police attended a mischief call in the 500 block of 10th Street. The complainant had the lock cut off a storage shed and two tires stolen. An investigation continues.

* At approximately 5:30 p.m. on August 21, police were called to the Weyburn General Hospital because a male was arguing with one of the patients. The man then left and began urinating in the parking lot. Police located the man, who was arrested for being intoxicated in public and also ticketed for urinating in a public place.

* Also on August 21, police were called to a local restaurant by the Weyburn Humane Society, who received a complaint of a dog that had been left in a vehicle for approximately 2 hours with the windows up and no water. Police were able to locate the owner, who was warned about leaving an animal in a vehicle.

* On August 20, theft of gas was reported from a truck that was parked in the Royal Hotel parking lot.

* Also on August 20, police attended to an accident in front of the El Rancho. Both vehicles were driveable, from Saskatchewan and there were no injuries. Parties exchanged names and will attend SGI.

* On the afternoon of August 20, The Independent Motorcycle Riders held their yearly toy run, which was lead by Weyburn Police Services, Cst. Gilchrist.

* Two females were approached on the August 18 by an unknown male. The male made sexual comments to the two females then fled. The females described the male as 5'10"-6', short dark hair, wearing cut off jeans, a hat and glasses. Police were unable to locate the male and are continuing to investigate.

* A complaint was also received of mischief to a motorcycle, which had its windshield damaged.

* On August 19, a male was stopped by Police at Prairie Avenue and Government Road, which resulted in numerous charges being laid. The driver was charged with exceeding 0.08, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving while prohibited and having open liquor in a motor vehicle. The driver's vehicle was seized for 30 days and he is awaiting court.

* Also on August 19, police, fire and EMS responded to an accident at 5th Avenue North and 16th Street. A northbound SUV on 16th Street made a left turn onto 5th Avenue North in front of a truck southbound on 16th Street. Extensive damage was done to both vehicles and the passenger of the SUV had to be extracted by the fire department and the Jaws of Life. The passenger was taken to hospital by EMS and was held overnight. The driver of the SUV was charged with making an improper left turn. The driver of the truck fled the scene after the accident, was later located, charged with failing to report an accident to the nearest police and was issued a 24 hour suspension.

* On August 17, police received a complaint that an ex-husband was threatening a woman's new boyfriend. The investigation is continuing.

* Also on August 17, a young person was caught by a store owner of a local business trying to steal merchandise. An investigation found that the young person also had merchandise from another business in town. All items were returned and no charges were laid due to the young persons' age.

* The Weyburn Police Service received 146 calls for service including thefts, threats, impaired driving and accidents during this reporting period. Sixteen false alarm calls, were attended during this week.

* Police would like to remind everyone that uses the lockers at a gym, pool, etc. to make sure that when placing items in them, they are locked before leaving them unattended. We are still getting reports of vehicle's being gone through, please remove valuables and lock the vehicle when not being used.

* Many mail scams have been reported using money orders. The scams involve cheques or money orders sent to the person selling the items in amounts that exceed what was being asked. The person then wants the seller to send the excess back to them. Police are asking that you take caution when selling or buying items on-line and to research before doing so.
