The Souris Valley Museum's A Pioneer Christmas No School Day offered a lot of historic holiday-themed fun. Participating in the day program were, from left, Olivia Ursu, a young gentleman, who preferred to escape the photographer, Sophie McKnight, Parker Packer, Scarlett Dow, Sadie Pennington, Kendrick Assoumbang, Theo Wock and Claire Assoumbang.

ESTEVAN - A Pioneer Christmas at the Souris Valley Museum offered a lot of entertaining and educational activities for kids ages six to 10 on their latest no-school day on Dec. 1.

Museum executive director/curator Melanie Memory said they offer various programming on no-school days to give parents an option to bring their kids to the museum, so the children could use their brains a little bit more, have fun and connect with other kids. No-school day programs also allow kids to explore the collection and learn more about history, local and global.

"Brianna [Robinson, education and outreach co-ordinator] always picks a theme. With Christmas coming, she picked Pioneer Christmas, and they are doing some activities around that, like making popcorn strings for a Christmas tree, doing ornaments to take home and Christmas cards, and they do a Pioneer Christmas-themed scavenger hunt," Memory said. "She also tells them about history … And most kids will ask a lot of questions … so they come here and they're learning something."

Weather permitting, kids also go outside, and if they are in for the full day, they stay for lunch.

"It's actually a really good day," Memory said.

The latest no-school day was full, and so are the most programs offered at the museum.

Next on their schedule will be I Am a Hockey Player on Dec. 8 for kids ages three to five. On Dec. 9, the SV Museum staff will be organizing Christmas carnival games at the Estevan Downtown Business Association's Miracle on Fourth. And on Dec. 15, the museum is hosting a Crafty Christmas day camp for three to five-year-olds.

Jan. 2-4 will see their snow-themed full-day camp.

The museum will be closed between Christmas and New Year but will be open for visitors during their regular hours outside of that.
