One determined driver causes extensive damage

Several drug and theft-related charges also levied by EPS members


What appeared to be a very determined or perhaps oblivious driver wreaked some havoc in Estevan on Nov. 18, according to information provided by the Estevan Police Service (EPS).

Police were alerted to an incident on the south side of the city when they received a report of a vehicle that had proceeded through the stop sign at the intersection of Highways 47 and 18 and then travelled through a fence, a yard, another fence and eventually into a parked car. The force of the impact pushed the parked car into a mobile home that was knocked slightly off its foundation.

The driver of the offending vehicle suffered only minor injuries and no one else was hurt during the event, but the incident left extensive damages in its wake including damage inflicted on two other vehicles that were parked nearby.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired driving and driving while his blood-alcohol level was over .08 per cent. He was also charged with dangerous driving. He is now scheduled for court in Estevan on Dec. 19.

Earlier in the week, EPS members carried out a significant arrest following a routine traffic/vehicle check. The Nov. 14 incident led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of marijuana and crack cocaine. A 20-year-old male who was operating the vehicle and a 17-year-old female passenger were charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The vehicle was impounded since it was unregistered and the driver was also charged for operating a vehicle while suspended.

A third person, a male passenger, was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance but was later released following further investigation.

The two other people who were arrested were remanded in custody prior to their court appearance in Carlyle on Nov. 16 to answer to the charges.

On Nov. 16, police were asked to look into a report of stolen gas from a local service station. The subject had left his cellphone behind with the station operator, noting he would be back within 15 minutes. He did not return and police continue their investigation.

A semi-trailer unit that left the road near a business on the east side of the city was assisted by another heavy haul company in putting the the trailer back on the street on Nov. 16.

Two other people reported to EPS that they had been involved in a vehicle accident in the central part of the city when one driver attempted to exit a parking lot and was struck by another. No injuries were reported.

A report of an erratic driver was registered with police on Nov. 16. It was noted that one vehicle passed another on the right side, using the space between the road's shoulder and the ditch. The licence of the offending vehicle was provided and the matter remains under investigation.

A vehicle stop in the north central part of the city on Nov. 16 resulted in the driver being charged for driving an unregistered vehicle and for displaying an unauthorized licence plate.

Police also noted that a vehicle and driver fled the scene following a hit-and-run incident in the central part of the city. The victim's vehicle had been struck in the rear. That incident was just one of several hit-and-run incidents reported to police on Nov. 16 and 17.

Police responded to a report of a suspicious person who was spotted looking into numerous vehicles in the central business section.

Three accidents were reported to police on Nov. 17. EPS noted that most were caused by weather and road conditions that prevailed at that time. One accident involved minor injuries.

On the night of Nov. 17 and early morning hours of Nov. 18, police responded to a call from a local motel regarding a break and enter incident. The manager had confronted a suspect who was attempting to break into the motel office area. A scuffle ensued and the subject threatened the manager with a knife before escaping. Investigation revealed that the freight room at the motel had also been entered and items had been removed. The matter remains under investigation.

On Nov. 18, EPS members investigated a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of 13th Avenue and King Street. No injuries were reported but the 18-year-old driver of the westbound vehicle was found to also be in possession of marijuana and was subsequently charged for that offence and now has a Dec. 19 court date in Estevan.

A 20-year-old man was arrested for being intoxicated in public on the night of Nov. 18 after police were called to an east central business. He was lodged in cells until sober.

A 47-year-old man was arrested for uttering threats in a north central business establishment on Nov. 18. The man had entered the premises and attempted to take a bottle of wine while uttering the threat after the wine was recovered from him. The matter remains under investigation.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for being intoxicated in public on Nov.18 when he was found asleep in the lobby of a local establishment. He was taken into custody and slept it off in police cells.

During a routine traffic stop in the north central area of the city, a youth was charged with being a minor while consuming or possessing alcohol.

A wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle parked near a restaurant in the central part of the city on Nov. 18. The matter remains under investigation.

A 53-year-old man was charged with being intoxicated in public following a disturbance in the central part of the city that same night. He was lodged in cells until sober. That same night, a 31-year-old man was also lodged in cells following another disturbance in the same area.

A report of two men engaged in a fight attracted police attention but when they arrived at the site on the east side of the city, the combatants had left.

A report of a 60-year-old man sleeping on a bench in the north central area of the city led to the subject being transported to police cells where he spent the night after being charged with being intoxicated in public.

A window that had been broken at a residence in the west end of the city, resulted in a police investigation on Nov. 18. A piece of ice had been hurled through the window.

A 35-year-old man was warned about his actions at an east central establishment earlier in the evening of Nov. 18. The incident that led to the warning remains under investigation.

Police were called to a north central Estevan establishment on the night of Nov. 18 when it was reported that a 39-year-old man was refusing to leave. He was eventually transported to police cells where he spent the night after being charged for being intoxicated in public.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged for being in possession of marijuana following a routine traffic stop on Nov. 18. He now has a Dec.19 court date.

A man who was refusing to leave a local establishment that same night, eventually left without further incident but police were then called back a short time later in response to a report that a female was refusing to leave the premises. She left when police arrived but not before having an altercation with bar staff.

EPS members were asked to look into several reports of thefts from vehicles on Nov. 20. The incidents occurred during the early morning hours. Police managed to track the suspect and arrested a 21-year-old Estevan man and also recovered numerous items that had been lifted. Since police are still holding several of these stolen items, they are asking the people who had been victims to come forward and reclaim their goods by properly identifying them. Police said they want to return the items to their rightful owners. At the same time, they issued a reminder to the public to make sure their vehicles are locked and no valuable items are left inside for extended periods.

A theft of items from a local business also drew police attention on Nov. 20. Security recordings managed to capture the event on camera so the matter remains under investigation and charges are pending.
