Nominations will open soon for the 2011 Golden Spike Award, which is presented annually by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.

The Golden Spike Award goes to the nominee who has made an outstanding contribution to Weyburn area through his or her volunteer service in previous years. It is awarded to the nominee who scores the highest in the five categories as decided by the judges.

The criteria for the award include longevity, the amount of time the individual has been involved in activities in the community; community involvement, the amount of volunteer work the individual does with the goal of improving the community; professional involvement, the effort the individual devotes to their industry; leadership, the individual's effort towards helping others learn and grow and stewardship, the individual's commitment to the wise management and use of resources.

The Golden Spike Award was first given out in 1982 and has since been given out annually to deserving Weyburn and area residents. Last year's recipient of the Golden Spike Award was April Sampson for her extensive volunteer efforts with numerous organizations in Weyburn over the past 55 years.
