REGINA — Two local non-profit charities in Saskatchewan have some extra warm headwear to offer their clients this holiday season, thanks to a donation from the national Campaign for Wool that was hand-delivered by Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant-Governor Russ Mirasty.
Donations of handmade toques went to the North Central Family Centre in Regina and EGADZ Youth Centre in Saskatoon, both of which operate as non-profit charities providing activities and programming to families, children and seniors.
Each toque was hand-knit during the inaugural Canadian Wool Month Knit-Along in October, which challenged knitters across the nation to create toques from 100 per cent Canadian wool for those in need of warm clothing.
“This is such a kind gesture from Canada’s knitters and I know both The North Central Family Centre and EGADZ are delighted with the donation,” said Mirasty.
Mirasty thanked the Campaign for Wool for including Saskatchewan charities in its project, which CEO Matthew J. Rowe said was both a fun activity for knitters and a great opportunity to help Canadian charities.
“Canadian wool is the best fibre there is for keeping you warm and dry in a Saskatchewan winter,” said Rowe.
Knitters who took part in the project were entered into a draw, said a press release.
The Campaign for Wool is an initiative launched by Prince Charles of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in 2014, with the goal of raising awareness about the benefits of wool and to support the wool industry.
