In one of the closest competitions in the history of the Golden Garbage Can, Weyburn barely squeaked by with 29 points to earn first place in the Clean Up Competition. Estevan was close behind with 31 points. We are very excited by this win, and it came from all the hard work of the residents, the engineering department and parks department, said Coun. Nancy Styles. Points are scored in the Golden Garbage Can when the judges note an area that needs cleaning, with the lower-scoring community earning the win. This year, the judges had to go back to their notes as the points were so close they almost declared a tie.The only difference was some abandoned vehicles and a couple of refrigerators in Estevan, said Styles. One of the bad things for Weyburn was the back alleys had very tall grass and lawns werent mowed. The judges had noted a lot of improvement in Estevan, considering the fact that they had not competed in the competition for the last three years. It is expected that the Golden Garbage Can competition will be just as close next year, with both communities working hard. For residential judging in Weyburns Clean Up Campaign, which was held on June 7, Area Five (East of 16th Street from East Avenue north to Douglas Road) was declared the most improved. Area One (Â鶹´«Ã½AV Hill) was declared as the runner up in showing most improvement over previous years.Residential judges noted that there was very little litter accumulation and blowing garbage. However, there were many large tree branches, long grass and weeds in back lanes. The residential judges did comment on the number of new fences going up and that it makes Weyburn look much more tidy and clean.Chamber business judging took place on June 21, and they found picking winners very difficult. Choosing just two winners from this business community is getting more and more difficult each year, said Jeff Richards, Chamber manager. The judges were overwhelmed by the efforts our business community devotes to keeping Weyburn clean. The Industrial and Agricultural Division was won by KND Services; and the Commercial Services Division was won by Weyburn Eye Care.Looking forward to the national judges visiting Weyburn for Communities in Bloom on July 29, Styles encourages residents to pay special attention to their back alleys and boulevards.
