More scam warnings and some false alarms for EPS

Estevan Police Service (EPS) along with members of the Estevan detachment of the RCMP issued a warning this week about numerous calls they have handled regarding a recent telephone/computer scam.

The computer owners are receiving calls from unknown sources informing them that their computer is interfering with a national system and they then make attempts to gain access to their home computer by asking various questions.

"Police remind the public to exercise caution when providing any personal details over the phone or allowing access to their computer system," the EPS release noted. (See related news release from the RCMP in this week's edition).

These attempts to gain illegal access to computers should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

On the night of June 28, a 33-year-old man was charged with impaired driving and driving while his blood-alcohol level was over .08 per cent when police discovered him driving erratically through a local parking lot. The driver was also served a ticket for creating a loud and unnecessary noise. The subject now has a July 25 court date.

Police were called upon to assist a local family in their attempt to locate a family member who had temporarily gone missing. The missing woman was located at the hospital and the matter was concluded by police.

An unwanted guest at a party in the Trojan subdivision was removed from the scene by police on the night of June 28. The unwanted guest had been drinking. He was turned over to the care of family members and no further action was required by police.

During the course of that same evening, police responded to two security alarms that were ultimately deemed to be false and so no further action was required.

On July 1, EPS members were called out to two motor vehicle accidents on Henry Street in the late afternoon. No injuries were reported in either incident but damages to the vehicles were severe enough that they had to be towed from the scene. No charges were laid.

On July 2, EPS members attended to several false alarms throughout the city and one even resulted in a response from Estevan Fire Safety since there had been a report coming from a fire alarm system that required attention. Both agencies responded and discerned that there were no fire or safety issues involved.

Some mischief items were reported to police during the day of July 2. A vehicle parked in Willow Park Greens had been vandalized. Police are seeking the assistance of the public in this incident. Anyone with information regarding this act of vandalism is asked to contact EPS at 634-4767 or report anonymously through Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police next fielded a call regarding a stolen vehicle that had been taken from a residence on the north side of the city. Police located the undamaged vehicle a short while later. The details surrounding the theft are being investigated.

On July 3 police were called about a missing two-year-old boy on the north side of the city. Police members located the youngster a short time and distance later. The young boy was unharmed and it was learned that the youngster had simply followed a family pet through an open gate in the yard.
