REGINA — Michael Gordon Jackson made his first appearance in Saskatchewan Provincial Court Tuesday, after his arrest at a B.C. business following a nation-wide search for his missing daughter.
Jackson was taken into custody in Vernon, B.C. on Feb. 24, in compliance with a nation-wide warrant for his arrest obtained by RCMP during an investigation into reports that Jackson's seven-year-old daughter was missing earlier in January.
Jackson, of Carievale, Sask., was found to be the suspect in the search, allegedly taking his daughter without permission from mother Mariecar Jackson to prevent the child from being vaccinated for COVID-19. Mariecar Jackson was given full custody in January of this year,
In relation to that investigation, Jackson has been charged with one count of abduction in contravention to a custody or parental order, with the intent to deprive the child in question from their court-appointed guardian, per Section 282(1) of the Criminal Code.
Following his arrest, Jackson was returned to Regina from B.C. for court proceedings, which began Tuesday. Saskatchewan RCMP confirmed that Jackson's daughter has been reunited with her mother at this time.
During his court appearance, Jackson requested an adjournment to secure legal representation, which was approved by the Crown and presiding Judge Lane Weigers.
Jackson will remain in custody until his bail hearing, set for Thursday afternoon.
