The RCMP are continuing investigations into a couple of recent events that resulted in the deaths of two people in southeast Saskatchewan.
Sergeant Daryl Milo, the Estevan detachment spokesman, said an investigation into a Feb. 11 collision on Highway 39 near Estevan that took the life of a Midale area woman, is ongoing. The woman was the lone occupant of one vehicle that was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle bearing Manitoba licence plates that was being driven by a 22-year-old male who had another man as a passenger in his vehicle. Both men were transported to a Regina hospital with critical injuries and both have survived, said Milo, who added that the two men were still in hospital as of last Friday due to the seriousness of their injuries.
"So we're not a lot further ahead in our investigation. We have been able to take some steps forward and we're waiting on some information from other agencies," Milo said.
At the time of the collision, it was stated that the Manitoba vehicle had veered over the highway's centre line and that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
But to date, the RCMP said charges could range anywhere from something under the Traffic Safety Act to a variety of Criminal Code charges but until further evidence was gathered, a more exact statement regarding pending charges, could not be issued.
The local detachment is also continuing their investigation into a Feb. 17 incident at a rail transloading site near Willmar that took the life of a driver, the lone occupant of a vehicle that was in collision with a rail car that was located at a rail crossing near an oil transloading facility.
"The cause of the collision is still being determined. Speed and alcohol may have been a factor in this incident as well," said Milo.
It was noted that the road conditions in the area were good at the time of the accident but a fog had moved into the region that evening which might have obscured vision.
The file on this incident remains open until further information and evidence has been gathered, the sergeant said.
