ESTEVAN - Lori Carr wants another term as the MLA of the Estevan-Big Muddy constituency.
Carr was acclaimed as the Saskatchewan Party’s candidate for the riding at a nomination meeting Wednesday night at the Estevan branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, with a handful of people in attendance.
Carr has been the riding’s MLA since she was elected in 2016. She was re-elected in 2020.
She has held a number of different cabinet positions, and currently serves as the minister of SaskBuilds and Procurement, minister responsible for the Public Service Commission, and the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.
After the meeting, she told the Mercury that she never had any doubts about running in the next election, and there are still some things locally, such as the construction of a new regional nursing home for Estevan, that she wants to see happen.
If nothing else, it will be a different riding. Several rural communities, including Radville, Gladmar, Lake Alma and Beaubier, were added to the constituency in the once-a-decade redesign of the provincial constituency boundaries last year. It means that the riding will be considerably larger than it was for the 2016 and 2020 votes.
“The footprint of my constituency has literally doubled,” said Carr.
The change resulted in the new name for the riding as well. Changes take effect when the 2024 provincial election is called.
The Sask. Party has now nominated five candidates for the 2024 election.
The next election is slated for Oct. 30, 2024.
