Icy roads led to damaged vehicles and minor injuries

Some blustery winter weather and icy conditions were at least partially responsible for a number of minor vehicle accidents within the city during the past week.

On Jan. 23, Estevan Police Service (EPS) members were called to an accident scene in the 1100 block of Valley Street where two vehicles had been in a collision causing minor injuries to both drivers.

Emergency medical services personnel attended the scene to administer assistance to the drivers and transport them to hospital for further observation while police attended to the scene of the crash and then had the vehicles towed from the site.

On Jan. 24 EPS reported numerous traffic accidents throughout the day due once again to slippery road conditions. No injuries were reported but a number of vehicles sustained damages that required them to be towed from the scene since they could no longer be driven.

On the night of Jan. 25, EPS members attended to a domestic dispute in the Trojan area. Both parties were spoken to and the matter was resolved when one of them left the residence for the rest of the night.

On the night of Jan. 26, city police responded to a call from the city's south side regarding an assault in progress. When they arrived at the scene, police located a 16-year-old male who had been assaulted by two other young people.

Witnesses to the assault had stopped and assisted the victim while the two suspects fled in a vehicle. Police were able to locate the suspects a short while later and charged two Estevan youths with assault. They are scheduled to appear in court later this month. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment to his minor injuries.

Police located a 21-year-old Estevan man in a vehicle parked near a lounge on the night of Jan. 26. Upon checking the situation, police ascertained the man was intoxicated so he was arrested and charged with being in care and control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

On Jan. 27, a hit and run incident in the city's northeast area attracted police attention. A vehicle had struck another parked vehicle. The supposed offender was located within two hours and charged with driving too fast for road conditions.

A 27-year-old man was charged with driving while impaired and for driving while his blood-alcohol level was over .08 per cent on the night of Jan. 27. The man was lodged in cells until sober.

EPS members attended to a local lounge on the night of Jan. 27 in response to a report of a man refusing to leave the facility after being asked to do so. The 36-year-old man left the premises upon police arrival and no further action was required.

A fight involving several men attending a lounge on the city's north side on Jan. 27 resulted in police having to discuss the matter with four participants who were later sent on separate ways.

That same night, a 26-year-old Estevan man was charged with disturbing the peace and for being in possession of marijuana following a report of a disturbance at a store in the north central area of the city. He was lodged in cells until sober.

Another fight involving a large group of people at a lounge in the east central part of the city resulted in police attendance on the night of Jan. 27. The fight had ended prior to their arrival so several men and women were spoken to by EPS members regarding the incident. The matter remains under investigation.

Two men were arrested for being intoxicated in public when they were picked up while attempting to walk to Midale in cold weather without proper clothing. They were released from custody after they regained sobriety.

A 34-year-old Estevan man was arrested after he was discovered passed out at a local lounge in the east central area of the city. He was also lodged in cells until sober.

On the night of Jan. 28, EPS members responded to a report of a break and enter at a home in the northeast area. The suspects removed a large television as well as an unknown amount of cash. The matter remains under investigation.

EPS members were required to attend to a lounge in the north central part of the city on the night of Jan. 28. Police proceeded to remove two men who had been asked to leave the establishment by management earlier in the evening. One 24-year-old man was arrested on outstanding warrants and later released while a 28-year-old man was arrested for being intoxicated in public so he was lodged in cells until sober.

A report of a fight breaking out on the night of Jan. 28 resulted in EPS members attending the scene. The fracas had involved several people at a lounge. Several men were interviewed by police who have kept the incident under investigation.

A disturbance at a store in the north central part of the city required police attention on the night of Jan. 28. A 24-year-old woman was spoken to about her behaviour and eventually sent on her way by police.

On that same night EPS members issued several tickets to people who were caught consuming alcohol in public.
