Bob Deptuck of Rocanville was in Weyburn recently to talk to the electors of Souris-Moose Mountain. He is the Green Party candidate for this area and will run in the May 2 Federal Election.
Deptuck said that considering that Saskatchewan is experiencing a "boom time," issues such as affordable housing and the environment should not be ignored.
"The aging population is concerned about where they are going to live out the rest of their lives," said Deptuck. "No one can live on $20,000 (pension) a year."
Deptuck said that with the provinces' success in the oil and gas industry, residents should expect the government to support more environmental initiatives to keep people safe.
"There is nothing in the Green Party platform that says we should stop being successful," said Deptuck. "We want Canada to continue being a front-runner in industry but we want to make sure our home is safe."
"The environment is at the core of everything people value - it's our home and no one wants to see our land and water ruined."
Deptuck said with the increase in industry in this area, the government must ensure that infrastructure, particularly highways, are well funded. He said the Green Party also wants to see increased funding for crime prevention for the growing population by hiring more police and RCMP officers.
