WEYBURN – A longtime businessman and former city alderman, Alex Miles, is marking his 90th birthday today, Dec. 8.
Miles served as an alderman on city council from 1970 to 1973, and also from 1977 to 1979, and he owned and operated his insurance business, Miles Agencies, from 1963 to 1988.
Miles has had extensive involvement in the community, as he is a past member of the Young Fellows Club, including serving as president in 1959, and is a long-time member of the Weyburn Rotary Club, where he was made an honourary life member two years ago.
A longtime friend, fellow Rotarian and businessman, Mal Barber, characterized Miles with two key words: commitment and adventure, as this embodied much of what he did and continues to do today.
“He is committed to his family, his church, his community and his business,” said Barber. “He had the spirit of adventure. Being an entrepreneur is an adventure, and as a family man, he piled his family into a van to drive to the mountains and took them downhill skiing, going down the intermediate and Black Diamond runs because it was an adventure.”
He brought this adventurous spirit to Weyburn, as his daughter Deborah noted he was a founding member of the Weyburn Ski Club, and built the one and only downhill ski run on Signal Hill.
Barber added Miles also showed his adventurous side by going down to the Caribbean Sea and captaining a sailboat.
“In all of the activities in the community, he served with dedication with his community’s interests at heart,” said Barber.
