ESTEVAN - The Estevan Police Service (EPS) has already handled a couple of calls related to people refusing to heed the reinstated provincial masking mandate.
Police were called to a local business Sept. 18 for a report of an assault on a staff member by a customer being requested to don a mask. The customer uttered threats to staff and further grabbed a staff member’s cellular phone when the person was attempting to call the police.
Police arrested and charged a Glen Ewen man for common assault and one count of uttering threats. He will appear in Estevan Provincial Court on Nov. 15 to answer to the charges.
The EPS also received a complaint the previous day of a male entering a local business and causing a disturbance when he was advised he must wear a mask. Police are investigating as to whether there is a criminal case for causing a disturbance, and if so, a charge will be pending.
In other recent police news, EPS members who are part of the Combined Traffic Services of Saskatchewan had a 31-year-old man flee during a traffic stop on Sept. 15. Police located the man a short time later and he was arrested for flight from police and obstructing a police officer. He made his first appearance in Estevan Provincial Court on Sept. 16.
Police were called to a gas station for a report of a customer damaging property inside the store. Officers attended and arrested a 25-year-old man for mischief and being intoxicated in a public place.
Members were called to a domestic assault in the early evening of Sept. 16. A 33-year-old man was arrested for assault and breach of probation. During the arrest the male assaulted one of the officers, resisted arrest and uttered threats to the officers. He was held in custody to be brought before a judge, and will make his first court appearance on these charges on Sept. 20.
Police arrested a 37-year-old woman after an investigation into theft of a bank card. She was charged with one count of theft and three counts of fraud.
Members were called to St. Joseph’s Hospital on Sept. 17 to assist with an unruly patient. Officers attended and things appeared to settle down. Police left but were called back a short while later for the same individual. The person was intoxicated and not co-operative, and was arrested for public intoxication and lodged in cells for a period of time to sober up. The individual was released later on in the evening to a family member.
Police received a complaint in relation to contract workers overloading their trucks and therefore being overweight on the city streets. The matter is still under investigation and being monitored.
