An incident involving a stolen vehicle that began in Estevan, ended on Highway 39 near Halbrite. The incident involved two policing agencies and has led to a number of charges being laid against an Estevan man.
Estevan Police Service (EPS) members reported that on the night of March 2 they attempted to stop and check a vehicle for speeding on the city's west side. The driver refused to stop and police ended up pursuing the vehicle out of the city and onto the highway.
While they were involved in this activity, EPS learned that the vehicle being driven by the suspect had been stolen from a local business so they decided to follow the vehicle and did so as it travelled as far as Halbrite before it collided with an oncoming vehicle.
Two occupants of the oncoming vehicle suffered undetermined injuries and were transported to Weyburn General Hospital along with the driver of the stolen vehicle who was also injured in the collision.
EPS members learned the next day that the two people in the victim's vehicle were transported to a Regina hospital and were treated and later released while the 19-year-old Estevan man who was driving the stolen vehicle is being charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, flight from police and theft of a motor vehicle.
The Weyburn detachment of the RCMP are also laying charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and obstruction of a police officer against the same man.
The incident continues to be investigated and the suspect remains in a Regina hospital recovering from injuries sustained in the collision.
In other EPS activities during the past weekend, it was noted that they responded to a report of a fight at a local lounge and found the combatants outside the establishment once they arrived.
EPS members talked with the people concerned and discovered that one of them had uttered threats to the management of the lounge, so he was subsequently arrested and lodged in cells until sober. He now faces several criminal charges and has an April court date.
A report of another fight at a city lounge led to EPS arriving on the scene to speak with the victim of the assault that had resulted in some minor injuries. An investigation was launched and charges are pending.
On the night of March 3, EPS members were called to a motel in the city to look into the activities of some intoxicated people who were causing problems. Police arrested two Manitoba men for causing a disturbance. They were lodged in cells until sober.
On that same night, EPS members were called to a local business in response to a report of a theft in progress. They arrived on the scene and were able to nab and arrest an Estevan man and charge him with the theft of goods valued at under $5,000. They learned the man had taken the tip jar at a local lounge. He has a court appearance scheduled for later this month.
A 28-year-old Estevan man was charged by city police on March 3 for damages inflicted on a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident in a local parking lot. The suspect's vehicle had struck a vehicle that was parked in the lot, but had done so with witnesses present. Police managed to locate the offending vehicle and driver who was arrested and charged with impaired driving and for leaving the scene of an accident. He was also lodged in cells until sober.
