Envision Counselling and Support Centre announced that Oct. 17-23 has been proclaimed as the 2011 "Week Without Violence" in conjunction with the YWCAs of Canada. Envision will use this week to highlight the need to address the issue of interpersonal violence in southeast Saskatchewan.
"The demand for services from our agency continues to increase. We have seen over 900 referrals to our programs in the past year through our website, 24-hour support line and direct client referrals," said Patt Lenover-Adams, executive director for Envision.
Envision continues to offer services to survivors and secondary survivors of family violence, sexual assault, dating violence, past childhood abuse and older person. People seeking support are able to access counselling support groups, education programming and crisis intervention through Envision.
Anyone interested in receiving counselling can phone and book an appointment with a counsellor in the Weyburn office. People can contact a counsellor confidentially through the Envision website, at www.envisioncounsellingcentre.com, where they can ask a question about any issues surrounding interpersonal violence and abuse. The website has a wealth of information available to the public on this issue.
Envision also has a 24-hour sexual assault/abuse support line that can help members of the community whose lives have been touched by violence. Volunteers are available to offer an empathic ear for callers, or else they can direct them to an agency that can offer assistance and support.
Volunteers are always needed for the line and the fall training session will begin at the end of October. Anyone interested in volunteering for the line is encouraged to contact Angela at the Estevan office for more information.
Envision hopes that as more people seek help and are informed of the issues surrounding interpersonal violence and abuse, the community will be stronger and more empowered as a result.
