The developer of the coming Boston Pizza restaurant in Weyburn wants to see if there is interest in building a new development in the Riverfront Market area, on the land formerly occupied by the Co-op Feed Mill.Gary Tremblay has taken an option on the land as he puts out inquiries to see what the level of interest is; if he receives enough interest, he will put up a building in accordance with the zoning for that area, which is the Riverfront Market zone.Tremblay said he is looking for retail, government or professional offices to occupy the building, which would be around 15,000 square feet in total, with individual 1,500 square foot bays.I was in there (Thursday) talking about the site plan. The city and I will work together on that, said Tremblay, noting he has had inquiries from national retailers already about the space. He noted on a sign he put on the site he said the building would be 25,000 square feet, but as the city needed some space back for the road to the Soo Line Museum, the building will likely have to be reduced to 15,000 sq. ft.He has a period of time in which to decide. We have agreed to a purchase price, which is listed in a document, and he will market it and see if there is interest in development which is appropriate to the market zone, said Doug Mulhall, manager of Community Services for the City of Weyburn. Neither Mulhall or Tremblay would say what the period of time was, but by the deadline the developer has to decide if he will in fact buy the property and put up the building as proposed. In the meanwhile, we are looking at that area from a long-term perspective, to see what we can do to further enhance the area, added Mulhall.According to the citys zoning bylaw, the purpose of the Riverfront Market area is provide a welcome to the city and a strong sense of entrance to the City of Weyburn. As the major access to the hub of the citys commercial and business centre, this area is intended to take on the character of a thriving riverside market, states the bylaw, listing as permitted uses such examples as an art gallery, clinic, confectionary store, custom workshop, fast food outlet, financial institution, liquor store, museum, restaurant, retail store or a studio. In the meantime, the Boston Pizza development began about two or three weeks later than Tremblay had planned, and now plans to have it open by early February.
