The Â鶹´«Ã½AV East Cornerstone School Board was asked to consider the historical aspect of the Weyburn Comprehensive School at its latest meeting.

A delegation from the Soo Line Historical Museum asked the Board if it would be willing to provide them with a large quantity of bricks from the older parts of the Weyburn Comprehensive School, which are to be torn down as part of the school's renewal process. Soo Line Past-president Art Wallace explained the bricks were made in Weyburn, back when the city had three brick-making facilities during the first few decades of the 20th century.

In requesting the bricks, Wallace said some would go on display at the museum, while others could - if the Board approved - be incorporated into the new facility. Board Chair Carol Flynn informed the delegation that the Board would think over the request and get back to the group as soon as possible. She added the Board's response could also include two rectangular cement signs stenciled with "Boys" and "Girls" currently situated over the school's entrances.

Also during the meeting, approval was given for the new 2011-12 school year calendar.

The 2011-12 school year will begin on Monday, August 29 for staff and Thursday, September 1 for students, after the Board approved the recommended option for the start of the next school year. The Board had originally given some direction to a committee to present three possible options to employees for the start of the next school year.

The Ministry of Education has approved the Board's request to alter the school year for the Weyburn Comprehensive School for the 2011-12 school year. The Board made the request so that students would be out of the school and not have their learning or safety impacted when construction begins on the facility. With the altered school year now approved, Semester 1 will be completed in December 2011 and Semester 2 will end near the beginning of June 2012.

Construction and renovations to the school will begin this spring, with Contract One involving construction on the north side of the building. The completion of Contract One is scheduled for September 2012. Completion of the entire project is slated for 2013.
