Gigantic gourds, and vegetables, will be the main attraction at the 11th annual Creelman Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 29.

The festival, which is organized by the Creelman Agricultural Society, will be hosted in the Creelman Memorial Hall and starts at 7 p.m. Entrance costs $2 for adults, $1 for students or $5 for the entire family.

"It's a good time for everybody to get together," said Dennis Smith, vice-president of the Creelman Agriculture Society.

Pumpkins, of course, will be competing at the festival, but entries for biggest zucchini, heaviest potato, longest carrot, and tallest sunflower, among others, will be held too.

"We've had some pretty good, tall sunflowers," said Smith, adding that he remembers some that have reached 12 or 13 feet.

A contest for the best baked goods, which must use pumpkin as an ingredient, will run simultaneously.

For the kids, there is a costume competition, with cash prizes, and a pumpkin-decorating contest.

Smith said the festival started as a way to encourage people to grow something.
