The City of Weyburn provided an update about construction progress on the Credit Union Spark Centre, which will receive $917,930 in combined federal-provincial funding toward its completion.
Construction on the multi-purpose sports, culture and recreation facility began in March 2019 and will include interior features such as an exercise track, art gallery, pottery studio, multi-use indoor sports field and outdoor ice surface.
To date, construction is 99 per cent complete with specialty finishes being installed and mechanical system commissioning underway. The facility remains on track for its scheduled opening in September 2021.
Under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Government of Canada will contribute up to $500,712, and the Government of Saskatchewan will contribute up to $417,218 toward the Credit Union Spark Centre (Weyburn Recreation and Cultural Centre) for several out-of-contract amenities including the indoor playground structure located in the MNP Play Centre, a National Hockey League sized arena board system, half-size International Federation of Association Football synthetic sports turf, synthetic sports turf covering, score clocks, spectator bleachers, and multi-sport video simulators.
“Community and recreation centres are the heart of our communities,” said the Honourable Jim Carr, the Government of Canada’s Special Representative for the Prairies, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “I’m happy to see the multi-purpose facility in Weyburn so close to completion, ready to welcome all members of the community to enjoy arts, practice various sports, stay active, and lead healthier lives. Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across the country, and builds cleaner, more inclusive communities.”
“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to support the City of Weyburn by investing $417,218 toward the construction of the new Credit Union Spark Centre, specifically the installation of a new hockey board system, synthetic sports turf, score clocks, and bleachers. When complete, the Spark Centre will serve as a hub for people of all ages in the region and lead to a healthy and thriving community. This project is a prime example of how area residents, local businesses and the corporate sector can work together towards a common goal that benefits the entire community,” said Don McMorris, Minister of Government Relations.
“This facility will be a crown jewel for Weyburn and the communities around us that we serve. We appreciate the funding commitments from the Government of Canada and Government of Saskatchewan, along with our local sponsors, who have supported this important project that will bring many culture, leisure and economic opportunities to our city,” said Marcel Roy, Mayor of the City of Weyburn.
The entire project is estimated at $25 million. The remainder of the project is funded by the City of Weyburn and sponsorships from the local business and corporate community, including Weyburn Credit Union, MNP, Whitecap Resources, Weyburn Oilwomen and Viterra.
