Members of Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College (SERC) and the University of Regina (U of R) officially launched a community?based Master's of Education (MEd) program in Weyburn on December 1.
"This is an agreement between the U of R and Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College for the delivery of a community?based Masters of Education program for teachers within the school districts of Â鶹´«Ã½AVeast Regional College," said Jamie Hilts, vice-president of Academics for SERC. "This is an opportunity to expand the University of Regina's presence and at the same time meet the needs of our constituents looking to advance their careers in education."
The partnership with the U of R allows SERC to host the Master's program within the southeast region and recruit local educators.
"Our partnership with the U of R brings a Masters program to our region that is of the highest quality, because it is the same program that you can take right on campus," added Hilts. "We've already held meetings with regional school divisions to gain their input and share information."
The community?based MEd will commence in July 2011 and is a full degree program in either curriculum and instruction or educational leadership. The two?year program will be delivered by way of weekend sessions, summer institutes and online distance education. It will utilize a unique cohort model which provides a supportive learning community and allows graduate students to effectively link theory to local educational issues and practice.
Those interested in the program must have two years work experience in the field of education and a minimum four?year Bachelor degree (usually BEd), among other requirements.
SERC will be holding an information session in Weyburn on Wednesday, December 8 for those interested in learning more about the MEd program. The session will begin at 7 p.m. in the conference room at the Ramada Inn.
