WEYBURN - The flagpoles at Weyburn’s City Hall will be replaced with five new poles, to be arranged by the city’s cenotaph in Memorial Park.
Council was told at their August meeting the current flagpoles are no longer functioning properly and have been damaged, and the project was approved as part of the 2023 capital budget.
The City received one bid, from John Hulbert Construction, in the amount of $49,800, which was within the budget set at $60,000.
The project will see the new flagpoles installed at an angle on either side of the cenotaph, and once they are in, the current flagpoles will be removed.
There will be five poles put in place to give more flexibility for future flag-raising events and activities. They will be installed once the poles are made available by the supplier, council was told.
• In other council business, a slate of building officials were appointed for building inspections in the city, including two former city employees.
Doug Mulhall was appointed as a Class 3 licensed building official, and Amanda Kaufmann was appointed as a Class 2 building official.
Virginia Shepley and Bobby Baker were also appointed as Class 3 inspectors, while Walter Schroeder, David Kindred, Joshua Nitz and John Dulle were appointed as Class 1 officials.
Class 1 covers one and two-unit dwellings; class 2 covers buildings that are under Part 9 of the National Building Code; and class 3 cover all buildings under the code, including classes 1 and 2, and the application of the National Energy Code of Canada to all buildings.
These inspectors are all employed by Professional Building Inspects Inc., which is contracted by the City for all building inspections.
• Council awarded a contract for stormwater pipe inspections to Aquacoustic Remote Technologies Inc., in the amount of $48,761.
The inspections will use remote cameras, laser and/or sonar inspections of pipe segments, and will submit an assessment and technical report on the condition of the pipes to the city.
The bid was originally for $72,827, but a stormwater pipe on Fifth Avenue North was deleted to enable the bid to stay under the budgeted amount for this year. The contract was approved with the option of a three-year contract extension at the discretion of the City.
• In the June building permit report, the City of Weyburn issued six building permits and three demolition permits, and in July, the City issued six building permits and one demolition permit.
Among the permits in June was a permit for the foundation for the new hospital, with a construction value of $4,114,429
As of the end of July, the City has issued 29 building permits and eight demolition permits, with a total construction value of $5,810,521.
Compared to a year ago, the City had issued 31 building permits with a total value of $3,439,000.
