WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn is renewing their agreements with municipalities to provide fire and rescue services for a five-year period, starting on Jan. 1, 2022.
According to the five-year agreement which expires on Dec. 31, the Weyburn Fire Department provides fire and rescue agreements to the RMs of Weyburn (100 per cent), Griffin (25 per cent) and Souris Valley (50 per cent).
In addition, they provide rescue-only agreements with the RMs of Brokenshell (50 per cent), Lake Alma (100 per cent), Laurier (100 per cent), Wellington (100 per cent and Lomond (50 per cent), and the Town of Radville (100 per cent).
There is an annual levy formula for all agreements with a three-per-cent increase each year, plus additional fees for such services as response to dangerous goods incidents, heavy rescue, fire investigations, fire inspections, mileage and local assistance.
“I feel very good about you’ve laid out here,” said Coun. Jeff Richards.
Coun. Mel Van Betuw added, “We’re very fortunate to have partnerships with the RMs. The costs are very reasonable.”
• In other council business, council was informed that the City issued four building permits during the month of October with a total construction value of $85,000.
Two of the permits were for exterior upgrades, one was for a balcony repair and one was for a wheelchair ramp.
In 2021 to date, the City has issued 56 building permits with a total construction value o $6,131,900. This compares to a year ago when the City had issued 47 building permits by the end of October with a total value of $8,588,000.
In the Weyburn Builds program, there have been 22 building permits issued, compared to four for the same period a year ago.
• Council awarded the tender to provide insurance coverage to the City to Western Financial Group of Weyburn for a five-year term.
The City had received three proposals, from Marsh Canada Ltd. of Saskatoon, SUMAssure Insurance Reciprocal of Regina, which has held the policy for the City since 2015. The premium for 2021 was $288,640 plus PST.
After an extensive proposal with a list of criteria, Western Financial proposed a premium of $325,742, and SUMAssure-Aon quoted $328,373, with Marsh not providing any quote for a premium.
• A tender for five pickup trucks was awarded by council to Barber Motors of Weyburn for a 2022 delivery.
A request for proposals went out, and only Barber sent in a proposal. With an assessment of the proposal, the City will be buying one 2022 Chevrolet Colorado and four 2022 Chevrolet Silverado trucks for a total bid price of $221,915.
City engineer Jennifer Wilkinson noted the City fleet has 29 trucks currently, and 18 of them are 10 years old or older, and these new trucks will be replacing the oldest ones in the fleet.
