With instability throughout the world and the Canadian dollar low, some families may opt to stay in Canada. Discovering Canada during the Canada 150 year could be memorable.
Why not experience south-central Saskatchewan with a staycation in Bengough? Bengough is just an hour away from Assiniboia on Highways 13 and 34. It makes a short ride for a day trip and offers enough diversity to be entertaining. The tranquil town is nestled in the Big Muddy Valley among grain farming and ranching.
It offers something for everyone from hundred-year old buildings for the history buff to camping at the regional park. But the top attraction has to be the ice cream at Nic Nak on Main Street. The soft ice cream is rich and creamy. The hard ice cream comes in plenty of unique flavours like bubble gum and rocky road. And the ice cream sandwiches are homemade.
Visitors to Bengough can take a leisurely self-guided tour of the town. All along Main Street, plaques were set up to relate the history of businesses on each lot. Some are no longer standing like Uneeda Lunch, a restaurant standing from 1939 to the 1950s. Others like the sturdy building of Bengough Drugs built in 1912 is still being used.
Another point of interest is the Slope Mine Simulation located across from the regional park and alongside the highway. This exhibit illustrates the type of coal mining that was common to the region. The Bengough Museum has also opened for the summer and is worth a stop for indoor and outdoor exhibits.
Bengough Drugs is a must for shoppers to browse the unique assortment of goods. Moms might even sneak in a spa treatment while the children work off their energy at the playground.
The swimming pool is the jewel of the town. There are three types of pools for all ages as well as a diving board and deep end swimming. After a swim, visitors can have a picnic or barbecue at the Bengough and District Regional Park nearby the pool or dine out at the local eateries. There are also facilities for overnight camping for those wanting to make a weekend trip.
