Coun. Nancy Styles of the city's Environmental Resources committee looks over the pile of garbage, computer monitors and old TVs piled up ironically around a sign explicitly stating that it is an offence to do so. The pile showed up the morning of Mar. 29, and even included a mattress and box spring, and a closet door. As the many signs at the recycling bins clearly state, these bins are only for paper and cardboard; the SARCAN depot accepts electronic items for recycling, such as TVs and computer components, but they have to be brought to the depot during operating hours. Individuals can be fined up to $2,000, and companies up to $5,000, as this is a violation of the city bylaw. Coun. Styles asks if anyone sees individuals dumping these sort of items at the recycling bins to write down their licence numbers and contact the city police with the information.
