WEYBURN – Weyburn has been ranked as No. 17 on a list of the top 20 most economical cities to live in Canada, in an online article by Doug Murray, published by Slice.ca.
The article lists the 20 cheapest cities to live in the country, using cost-of-living data and compared with all cities with a population of more than 100,000.
“The most expensive cities are the larger cities, as well as those in the Prairie provinces and the North. If you want to find a cheaper Canadian city to put down roots, look towards smaller cities, especially in Quebec and Ontario,” said Murray.
Ranked as No. 17, this is the information Murray posted about Weyburn:
“Weyburn lies some 110 km southeast of Regina and 70 km north of the border with the United States. It’s the 10th-largest city in Saskatchewan, with a population of nearly 11,000.
“Weyburn used to be home to the Souris Valley Mental Health Hospital, which back in the day was the largest building in the British Commonwealth. Nowadays the economy is based on grain as well as oil and gas. Primary real estate in Weyburn costs an average of $301,846.”
This kind of ranking on a national scale is of definite benefit to Weyburn, said Larry Heggs of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development.
“To be named in the top 20 of one of the most economic cities to live in is amazing,” he said. “Especially during these COVID times as we are emerging from COVID.”
Heggs noted the timing of this article was impeccable, as Economic Development Weyburn is soon to release a new campaign that capitalizes on this very fact, and will encourage people to consider moving to Weyburn.
This is especially a good selling point as many people have been working from home due to COVID, and are continuing to work from home via computer, which they can do from anywhere in the country – and Weyburn is clearly more economical to live in than a major city like Vancouver, Calgary or Toronto.
“Weyburn is a great place to live and work,” noted Heggs, pointing out this survey shows a definite advantage for Weyburn.
