The Estevan Downtown Action Committee is seeking to draw attention to the city鈥檚 unique downtown business and retail sector during the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup.聽
Downtown businesses will be participating in a sidewalk sale from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 7. The committee believes this is a great chance to promote the shopping options in downtown Estevan, not only for those who are visiting the city during the tournament, but people who live in Estevan.
鈥淏y acting as a group we can enhance Estevan鈥檚 downtown core with events such as this,鈥� said Jennifer Pettitt, who is a committee members and the owner of Jenny Joans women鈥檚 clothing store. 鈥淲e are looking forward to getting new members this year for this very important group.鈥�
Estevan鈥檚 downtown is also home to numerous other vital services. It is where city hall, the courthouse, post office, police station and fire hall are located. This 鈥渙ne-stop shop鈥� for services is a notable feature of Estevan.
The downtown committee, which was formed in 2005, is a group of dedicated business owners who meet once a month to speak with a unified voice.聽
鈥淥ur primary role is to maintain and increase the vitality of the downtown core of Estevan by promoting it to the residents of Estevan and surrounding areas,鈥� said Pettitt.
鈥淚n light of the recent economy turn, we need a united downtown core. We face a consumer that is willing to travel for goods and services. We wish to maintain and promote a vibrant downtown business district that enhances the retail and service sectors in downtown Estevan.鈥�
The committee believes Estevan鈥檚 downtown provides a sense of community and belonging, and is a powerful symbol of shared experiences and common memory, and of the challenge and the struggle of building a civilization. The downtown is always familiar and always recognizable as the heart and soul of Estevan.
Since 2005, the committee has hosted several marquee events and initiatives to promote businesses, including a street fair in the spring, the Moonlight Madness sales before Christmas, the Black Friday promotions in November, sidewalk sales, Saskatchewan Roughrider promotions, a downtown payday program and more.
